Edmílson, a member of Brazil’s 2002 World Cup-winning squad, has highlighted the full-back positions as the main weakness in the current Seleção lineup for this year’s tournament.
Speaking on the program CNN Esportes S/A on Sunday, the former defender stressed that to win a World Cup, a team cannot afford to concede goals in knockout matches.
“Brazil conceded three goals in the 1994 World Cup and four in 2002. In knockout games, you can’t give away goals. You have to defend. I believe the biggest challenge for our generation is the full-backs. Not just in Brazil, but across the world, you don’t see great full-backs anymore. We used to be a prolific producer of left-backs and right-backs, but with the rise of wingers, that tradition has been lost—not only in Brazil but abroad,” Edmílson said.
